Herman Miller, Inc., based in Zeeland, Michigan, is a company that produces office furniture, equipment and home furnishings. It is one of the largest furniture companies in America. Herman Miller is a design focused company that also emphasizes community and environment wellness.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I was assigned a section of the factory for which I was responsible. As a manufacturing engineer, my job was to make the operators job faster and easier. I solved day to day problems as well as working on long term projects. A few projects I worked on were prototyping a design a vacuum lift assist device, designing a unique tool using modeling software, and managing departmental moves.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained some 3-D modeling skills. Also, I gained problem solving, project management, and people skills.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My team and my boss were my favorite part about the internship. They ensured that I was challenged but not drowning in my work and responsibilities. Everyone in the factory is very friendly and helpful. Also, the internship program helped introduce me to many aspects of the company and other interns working at Herman Miller.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I have found that there are many branches of engineering available to pursue. Manufacturing is now on the list of possible career paths moving forward.
