Description of the Organization
The Laker Academic Success Center (LASC) is the academic advising center for student-athletes here at GVSU. There are 5 advisors for the 600 student athletes we have on campus. Not only does the LASC advise students, but it provides supplemental education about the student athlete experience in various sessions throughout the year.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
My main job was to keep the student athlete engaged and informed via the social media account. I created an array of graphics and videos to post on Instagram. Coordinated with speakers to exchange information necessary to the success of their presentation.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I gained an appreciation for communication over email, and built my emailing skills. I was definitely one of those students who never paid attention to their email before, but now, it is an integral part of my everyday life.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this experience was getting the opportunity to interact with so many different people on any given day. I'm a people person who craves human interaction, so being able to see such a variety of faces on a daily basis satisfies my itch to get to know people.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
I never thought about being an academic advisor until I started working in the office. being in this office opened my eyes to that possibility, and next year, I will be a graduate assistant advisor in this same office. So now I can explore a different career field.
