Description of the Organization
Gentex Corporation is a company in Zeeland, MI that manufactures dimmable rearview mirrors, dimmable aircraft windows, commercial fire protection systems, and other high-tech electronic products for the automotive and aerospace industries. Gentex employs nearly 6,000 employees.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
During my co-op, I was responsible for several projects that sought to improve our manufacturing processes. Most of my projects involved designing fixtures to aid in the calibration processes of our machines. In addition, I also conducted preventative maintenance and efforts to improve assembly line ergonomics.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
My co-op helped me to develop my interpersonal skills by working on projects with others. I have also gotten to see what the design process looks like from start to finish within an actual engineering environment. This rotation has sharpened my skills at SolidWorks and CAD, workshop fabrication, and problem solving.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of my experience has been getting to work with lots of lots of great people and getting my first look at what a job in the field of engineering looks like. I found that I was surrounded by people and environments that proved to be valuable to my development as an engineer.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This first co-op rotation has served to affirm my decision to pursue a career in engineering, as I find the work I have done to be very enjoyable.
