Description of the Organization
Herman Miller is a large, high end furniture manufacturer based out of West Michigan. They have manufacturing plants around the world.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
Some of the projects I worked on varied from designing conveyor components, to overseeing part re-routing on the floor, to data collection and interpretation. All of which included working with many different people throughout the company. I was also put on a group project with some of the other interns where we worked on a presentation all summer and reported out at the end.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I learned how to better ask the right questions in order to get the answer you need to complete the task you're given. This also includes learning better self reliance skills. I also learned a little bit of AutoCad, as well as pivot tables and Pareto charts in Excel.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part was the connections I made between the other interns that I worked with here. A close second favorite part was getting to design a component for one of the conveyor lines that I can see being used every day.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has taught me a lot about the kind of engineering I like as well as am good at. I've figured out certain aspects that I don't like and certain avenues that I want to pursue more.
