Description of the Organization
The City of Grand Rapids is responsible for providing municipal services to residents of Grand Rapids, MI and overseeing the daily operations of the city. The Grand Rapids Police Department and Grand Rapids Fire Department are considered to be a part of this organization as well.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
As an intern in the Administrative Services department at the City of Grand Rapids, I was able to complete a large number of diverse projects for the organization. I was able to do all of the following: participate in candidate interviews, perform data analysis for the City's succession plan, join the board of a young professionals network called govern: GR, and give a presentation about the importance of employing young professionals to the City's top management.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I gained very specific knowledge of the City Charter and labor law; in particular I learned a great deal about the civil service employment system. I was able to apply statistical concepts learned in my coursework. I also refined my networking skills, as I was able to make several connections that will be invaluable as I begin my career in public service.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this experience was learning and hearing advice from my supervisors. They offered an incredible well of knowledge and were always available when I had questions or needed help with my assigned projects.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
My experience as an intern with the City of Grand Rapids has solidified my career goals. Before this opportunity I thought that I wanted a career in public service. Now, I know that I want public service to be my career.
