Description of the Organization
Axis Automation is an automation company located in Walker, MI with less than 100 employees. Axis integrates custom and automated equipment in the manufacturing sector, whether it's automotive, aerospace, transportation, or consumer specific.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I had the opportunity to assist in projects underway where project leaders could assign design-related tasks as a learning experience. While detailing and releasing design packages for projects were routine, a few projects consisted of: Material handling stations, end-effector tooling changeout stands, and improving an existing tooling station for a bumper assembly. Most notably, fabricating a container to house a robot while considering how to redirect fluids in a corrosive environment.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
The most critical takeaway is realizing that just because SolidWorks as a tool can create what may be envisioned, the design must be realistic and easy to convey to others. It must be realized that machining, tolerances, manufacturing, outsourcing, and purchases are all critical factors in the design process. Not to mention, pulling out a pencil and paper, concepting an initial design, and eventually communicating with the project leader, machinist, and machine builder will drive the success of a design in the long run.
Favorite Part of the Experience
The ability to implement or concept designs that were integral to a project. The freedom to be given a task and attempt a task that endures a great learning curve as well as bouncing ideas off of experienced mechanical engineers.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
Axis Automation has provided me the opportunity to be in an automating environment which is a career and passion for me. As automation is the future of manufacturing, I am grateful to be a part of a community where I can continue testing and implementing mechanical designs for robotics to interact with.
