Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

The type of internship I was assigned was to fill certain roles that of a Program State Director/Cheer Program Manager/Class Operations/Corporate Management. I spent a majority of the time working in the class operations department with scheduling, booking and coordinating events, advertising and marketing, hiring and human resources, customer service, quality control. In the Young Champions inventory and accounting departments, I dealt with budgeting, facility profit and loss review, class report processing, inventory design, and order processing. I was given the opportunity to gain overall knowledge on how a business functions from the small details to the big picture. Over the course of this internship, I gained insight to customer expectations by working in depth with the quality control team. I was in charge of scheduling for over 200 class locations for more than one program (cheerleading and self-defense) which allowed me to sharpen my organizational skills. This was also true for our event scheduling and planning. The event coordinating aspect of my position assisted me in developing management and other team leadership skills.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned how the inside of the businesses functioned from every single department. I learned about quality control, customer service, inventory and accounting department work as well as being a facility coordinator for our Michigan classes.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I loved the people that I got to work with. They really remained patient with me when I had a million questions for them. I didn't want to do anything wrong and make things hard on them, so I was very inquisitive all the time, which I know can get frustrating. Every day I felt like I learned something new, and I felt like my methods evolved over time giving me new and more efficient ways to do things. By the end of the internship, I felt like I really got the hang of how things could get done more efficiently and have it be easier on me. Also, I know people overlook phone skills going into a career, but this job REALLY helped my phone etiquette and my comfort level with talking on the phone with people all day every day. I am also proud to say I finally mastered different functions on the phones at the office- no more lost calls because I have a hard time transferring them!

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I feel like this internship has really prepared me in all aspects in working for the exact career I was looking for. I love the cheerleading industry, and I know this is what I want to surround myself with for the rest of my life. I love working behind the scenes of the sport that I am most passionate about while still getting to cheer, AND coach 8 different cheerleading and tumbling teams. I feel like this internship is just the beginning of a wonderful career in this 'cheer world' and I'm very fortunate to have had this internship and the guidance I received within the job.
