Description of the Organization

DeWys Manufacturing is a decent sized company that deals with the cutting, forming, machining, and welding of products for other companies. These products can be anywhere from one inch by one-inch pieces up to big parts that take two people to form. This is a great company to work for. Everyone here is extremely friendly and willing to help you learn what is needed to succeed. The teams here really make you feel as if you are apart of the ins and outs of the business.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

The team that I was officially on was the innovation team. This meant that we focused on ways to improve what was going on in house, that could mean helping improve quality, helping improve how machines run and taking employee suggestions on how to make things around the shop better. This semester I designed a couple of carts that will hold the waste from the paint line when parts are powder coated. This barrel can come close to 500 lbs. before the barrel needs to be emptied. Another project that I worked on was a system that would use a PLC to open a lid to one-inch container when the parts in the anywhere are to be used.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

There will always be things that can be learned in any job no matter how skilled you think you are. I learned this at an early age and take it where ever I end up. This summer at DeWys was no exception. I learned how to use SolidWorks at school but did not really know much about the sheet metal aspect of it. While learning how to use the sheet metal in SolidWorks, I also learned what can and can't be done in real life with sheet metal especially when it comes to how that is formed. Another skill that I have improved on this summer is welding.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this Co-Op has to be seeing something that I have created on the computer come to reality. There are so many aspects before the final product that are to often not thought about. From a blank sheet of metal to an intricate design that needs to be put together, seeing the whole process is pretty cool.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience has made me think about the future quite a bit. I still don't know exactly where I will end up but if it is anything like DeWys Manufacturing and its' environment I know I will love it.
