Description of the Organization
Herman Miller is a manufacturer of furniture and equipment. The branch that I worked in during this semester was Herman Miller's Healthcare department. This department focuses on manufacturing furniture and equipment for hospital room applications. The product line is called Compass.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I was primarily involved in cost savings engineering during this semester. This involved lots of brainstorming, problem solving, and testing in order to validate new ideas. The testing was not only performed in Herman Miller's laboratories but I was asked to perform Finite Element Analysis on CAD models prior to the physical tests.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I have become more proficient in Pro-Engineer CAD modeling and FEA ANSYS software. I have also become much better and developing test plans in order to achieve appropriate data to solve the problems at hand. Lastly, this internship has also helped to further improve my professional organization and planning skills as I was given many tasks to prioritize and work on during the last few months.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite parts of this semester were learning more modeling techniques on Pro-Engineer and helping the technicians while tests were performed that I had developed.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has helped to further solidify my desire to work as a full time engineer after I have completed my degree.
