Joseph
Experience Information
Employer: Magna Mirrors
Job Title: ME Intern
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No
Description of the Organization
There are around 90 employees at the Magna facility I work at. There is the Advance Product Development group (which is what I'm in), Product Engineering, Design, and a Test Lab. These all work together like a well oiled machine.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
Some of my responsibilities are benchmarking new outside mirrors that are entering the market on vehicles that are on the road, and 3D printing prototypes or parts for miscellaneous projects and innovations that are being done. I have been working on an advanced technology project for GM that is in very early stages. This has involved benchmarking, creating CAD designs, and decisions matrices for several mechanisms. I am also working on a lot of studies with our inside mirrors that have been on going for a couple months. Testing done for ground illuminators and many other tests that were needed.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I have gained a lot of experience in Creo, and 3D printing. I have also learned a lot of techniques to make the Instron machines the most beneficial. Also, i have gained a ton of hands on experience and recording data techniques to make the data as clean as possible.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part about this co-op was being able to work with the phenomenal staff at Magna. Without them I wouldn't have learned as much as I did throughout this term. I also liked the freedom I had, and if I was heading in the wrong direction i would be guided, but not necessarily given the answer to fix what was wrong.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has just confirmed that engineering is where I want to be. Especially in mechanical engineering.
