Description of the Organization

Mill Steel is a steel distribution company. We receive large coils of steel from mills around the country, once received we slit the steel into smaller size where we distribute to our customers. It sounds pretty simple but a lot of work goes into getting the steel ready to ship. It is a very interesting process and there is a lot of team work involved.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

Working as an engineering intern I started back in the lab where we test the physicals, chemistry, coating weight, and hardness of the material. After working in the lab for several months learning the system and type of material I was promoted to a material analysis job where I reviewed the results tested by the labs to determine whether or not the material would work for customer orders. I have also worked in the purchasing department as well as quality support. Mill Steel has allowed me to get a great feel how the business works.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I have became very knowledge able about what type of material that comes through our facilities and have learned how to handle many situations efficiently and quickly allowing the material to get through our system and to our customer as fast as possible. It has allowed me to build up my team working skills as well as my communication skills.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part about my experience was the people. Everyone that works in the Mill Steel family is great, and I say family because that is the atmosphere I feel like I work in. Everyone is very approachable and is willing to help you with anything you need. I have made some really good friends working for Mill Steel and I have had a very enjoyable time working here.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience has influenced the direction I want to take my engineering career. Even though I don't see myself doing this type of work in the future this experience has taught me to never be afraid to try something new and different and to always do whatever it takes to get the job done. It has showed me to take risks, they may not always work but you become a better person by learning. Which in turn showed me that I want to travel and live in other places and find a company that I enjoy working for everyday like I have at Mill Steel.
