Description of the Organization
GRPS is one of the states largest Public School Systems. As part athletic department we oversee with 13 Middle School athletic programs. We also coordinate with the two Athletic Directors at the High School level. Working with the 13 Middle Schools ADs with the High School ADs to provide athletic programming for our students throughout Grand Rapids.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
The main project this semester has been a proposal for an overhaul of the entire athletic system in GRPS Middle School Athletics. We are attempting to have our middle schools join a conference and introduce a more competitive format to help prepare our students for high school athletics. Aside from this task I have done scheduling for several sports as well as assisted in a walk through at Van Andel arena and surrounding area for this fall's turkey trot. Additionally, I have done game operations, setting up and breaking down events, as well as officiating.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I learned a lot about big picture operations in a public school environment. In addition, I also improved public speaking skills and organizational skills.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part was doing real work that matters. I love that I can have a positive impact in this role.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
My goals before this internship were to work in college coaching and later on in life possibly work in a high school or college athletic administration. This experience has affirmed those goals.
