Description of the Organization
The organizations that I interned at this summer included the 62B District Court as well as the privately run practice of Brinks Law Firm under the guidance of Attorney Magistrate Sharon Brinks. Firstly, the 62B District Court employs several workers including officers, clerks, Magistrates, and a Judge, and functions to ensure safety and justice within the community. Sharon Brinks was the magistrate for the small claims court here which allowed me to sit in on various days of hearings to observe. Additionally, I also worked alongside her at her individually owned and operated law firm.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
During my internship, I completed several tasks in both settings including co-hosting Zoom meetings for the Court and preparing court documents, reviewing written materials on law and ethics, working on client matters and directly with clients, reviewing and updating websites and social media, doing research relative to marketing and analysis of emerging trends in the legal field, and organizing paperwork in preparation for estate planning and client meetings.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Throughout this internship, I gained helpful knowledge and insight into the complexity of the law and what is required to practice it. I was able to meet many different individuals, each in different places in terms of their professional career including Judges and different types of lawyers. This wide array of experience coupled with the work I did further developed my personal, research, and technological skills.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of the internship was taking on an individual case to research alongside Attorney Brinks. She provided me with the necessary case file documents and I was able to do a deep dive into the case to help a client with future planning matters regarding their estate. It took me quite some time but I was proud of the knowledge that I gained and it felt very fulfilling to also be able to help someone else who is in a tough situation.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience confirmed to me that I am on the right path and that attending law school and one-day practicing law are my ultimate goals.
