Job Title: Advanced Product Design Engineering Intern
Major: Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering
Received Credit: Yes

Description of the Organization

My experience involved working for Magna Mirrors in Kentwood, MI. Magna is the leading global automotive supplier with 321 manufacturing operations and 102 product development, engineering and sales centers in 29 countries. They have over 159,000 employees. Although big, the engineering center in Kentwood has a small company feel with friendly faces everywhere you look.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

During my experience at Magna I worked many prototypes that will eventually make it on cars. Being able to see the hard work on consumer product is a surreal experience. In addition, I was in charge of building display stands and benchmarking the competition.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

The most valuable skills I learned is the proper communication between the designer and the workshop and business time management. Communication is key when designing parts. Instructions and designs need to be plausible and clear to avoid mistakes throughout the manufacturing of specific designs. Time management in school is extremely different than the work force. Occasionally I will get a task that needs to be completed as soon as possible with minimal preparation. This is in direct contrast with time management while in college.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part about my experience is knowing that I can point at a particular car and say I help built that product. Not too many people get the chance to physically see their hard work in action during an co-op experience. I'm very glad I found the company that allows me to use my creativity to the fullest.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

My future career goals has shifted to only seeking out employers are seeking a advanced product development engineer. Knowing what department I want to work is huge entering my senior year of college.
