Description of the Organization
TowerPinkster is an architectural and engineering firm that focuses on creating places for individuals to live, work, and play. The firm has two offices, one in Kalamazoo, and the other in Grand Rapids, with approximately 150 employees. TowerPinkster's clients are mostly in commercial, healthcare, K-12 education, higher education, and government. The firm prides itself heavily on its culture which is brought about by the intelligent and humble individuals that make up the company.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
Throughout the co-op semester, I worked on several K-12 education, government, and healthcare projects that involved designing new and updating existing mechanical systems (HVAC, mechanical equipment, and domestic plumbing). I was presented with a higher level of responsibility through getting to work on smaller projects from start to finish with the oversee of a professional engineer. An interesting project that I worked on was a snowmelt system that involved using knowledge I learned at GVSU as well as applying practical knowledge from work experience.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I gained the ability to apply concepts from engineering classes such as fluids mechanics to solve real-world problems. It is a rewarding experience when theoretical knowledge can be applied to the practical problems engineers face everyday in the working world. I have continued to enhance my knowledge of Autodesk Revit which is a building information modeling software used mainly by architects as well as MEP engineers. I had the opportunity to go on a site visit to a finished construction project to witness the implementation of a very complicated mechanical system.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of the co-op experience to continue to build professional as well as informal relationships with the individuals I work with at the company every single day. I have had the opportunity to better myself professionally thanks to a strong company dynamic and engineers who were willing to teach me information about the industry.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
The experience has influenced my future career goals by providing me with a possible job opportunity after I graduate. The company has displayed what a strong company culture looks like, and is definitely something to emulate.
