Experience Information

Job Title: Co-Op Software Engineer
Major: Computer Engineering
Received Credit: Yes

Description of the Organization
Dematic is a global industry leader, providing a comprehensive range of intelligent intralogistics and materials handling solutions.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I worked in the software R&D department in which my tasks generally consisted of developing new software for use in customer sites. During my first and second co-op rotations I worked on the same project, a large software suite consisting of multiple subsystems that were integrated into a larger product, targeted at intelligent management of a distribution center. This incorporated managing the flow of product through the system as well as providing information about how the product was moving through the system.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
In addition to the programming languages that I had already known (C, C++, Java and various web development languages) I was able to learn C#, Python and MSSQL. Since our teams in the department were operated under AGILE development, I was able to learn that method of software project management as well.
Favorite Part of the Experience
I really enjoyed developing software, especially programming, but I think the most enjoyable aspect of my co-op experience was the ability to work closely with a group of engineers who treated me as part of the team and their willingness to work together. From my first day the work was fast-paced but I felt from a very early stage that I was able to meaningfully contribute to the development effort.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
Through having the privilege of working for Dematic in their software R&D department, my ambitions of pursuing a career in software engineering have been both confirmed and realized. All things considered, I believe this co-op has been an excellent fit and I have enjoyed it very much. As for the future I would like to continue in software engineering, hopefully at Dematic.
