Experience Information
Employer: Durr Systems Inc.
Job Title: Controls Engineer
Major: Electrical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes

Description of the Organization
Dürr is a Global Mechanical and Plant Engineering Firm based in Germany with locations in 24+ countries. The company produces automation, testing, clean technology, and final assembly systems primarily for the automotive industry.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
Designed PLC and HMI programs for two projects, one project consisted of modifications to 3 air handling units and the other was the design of two new air handling units. I also went on a few commissioning trips (Indiana and Virginia) to aid in the commissioning and installation process for these projects.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I was able to implement PID controllers in ladder logic as well as tune them on the commissioning trips. I had practice with creating custom objects for HMI applications. I learned about air control (temperature, humidity, pressure, air flow) that is necessary for paint shops. Additionally, I was able to learn about how entire plants are designed, various clean technology systems, and the general customer interaction that goes into the design and planning process of engineering projects.
Favorite Part of the Experience
Being able to go on the commissioning trips and walk inside the chambers of the air houses. I knew that the air houses were big from seeing the one that Durr has in Southfield for testing, but I didn't realize that they could be larger than a house. Also being able to learn about what the other divisions at Durr design was really intriguing. Fun fact, ostrich feathers are still the most effective way to get the dust off of a car before painting it.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
It has definitely opened my eyes to the possibilities in automation and controls engineering. To learn about the new technologies that manufacturers are implementing in their plants around the world has been fascinating and I look forward to a career in implementing and developing these new technologies.
