GVSU Internship
Brody
Experience Information
Employer: GVSU Athletics
Job Title: Marketing Intern
Major: Sport Management
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: No
Abroad: No
Description of the Organization
I worked for the marketing department, which often worked closely with those in charge of communication aspects and sponsorship elements, as they all connect in some way. Along with that, things had to go through different channels regarding the deputy AD and other high-level members. Other areas, like typical gameday staff and directors, also would work closely as everything needs to work together. The marketing staff during football season was the biggest with around 10 interns helping out.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I helped execute promotions during games, along with assisting in giveaways and other types of promotions. I would help assist with setting up events, as well as making sure certain aspects of sponsors were fulfilled correctly. At other times, I would operate music or the video board during events in correlation to the game or promotions. Before certain events, I would assist in promoting them by passing out flyers or working on getting shirts and other items prepared.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
While I learned things like how to operate the music and video boards, I learned a lot about how marketing works behind the scenes in the sports world. At the same time, I got to learn how it works at the collegiate level, where things are often more restricted than at the professional level due to what is viewed as acceptable or not. More importantly, I learned a lot about myself. During my experience, I was able to figure out what I liked more and the path I wanted to go down in the sports world.
Favorite Part of the Experience
Being able to interact with and entertain fans was my favorite part. The fan development aspect of marketing is extremely fulfilling and makes the long days well worth it. It's also extremely cool to get a front-row seat to games, and everything else behind the scenes.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
It pointed me in a direction. Going into my degree, I didn't have a specific route in mind, but this experience allowed me to figure out what I truly liked and wanted to do.
