Description of the Organization

Genesis Seating is a manufacturing company that works for companies such as Steelcase, Herman Miller, Howe, and others. Genesis manufactures higher end office furniture for these companies, they also are involved in developing new products with these companies.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I have worked more on the new product development side of Genesis Seating during this rotation. This means that I've been involved in the construction of prototype models for testing and also been involved in enhancing old designs. In creation of new products we, as a manufacturer, need work instructions and control plans on these products, so I've been involved in the creation of those. I've sat in on multiple meetings with customers in discussion on the progress of changes made to existing chairs. I've also been involved in the design and fabrication of work fixtures.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gain valuable insight on how to deal with customers and the process of developing a new product. I've also learned design and fabrication skills.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this co-op was the design and fabrication of work fixtures. This took both metal and physical skills to complete. I got to work both on CAD and with my hands in the shop.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This has directed me to more of the design work instead of more manufacturing work. I very much enjoyed the work that required me to think and problem solve, the work that I could see the benefits of my efforts.
