Description of the Organization
My internship was for Senator Carl Levin's Grand Rapids office. This office is responsible serving constituents in western Michigan. The Grand Rapids office deals with everything from scheduling/staffing Senator Levin when in the area to serving constituents via phone, mail, email, and in person (and everything in-between).
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
While in the office, I was responsible for tracking and following correspondence from constituents, interest groups, and agencies. When necessary, I connected constituents with inquires to proper staff and/or agencies. I was the one typically the one who answered phone calls dealing with a wide range of topics from past/current legislation to more personal issues. This internship also gave me to opportunity to draft letters and become more familiar with the structure of a congressional office.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
My internship with Senator Levin's office taught me how to become a more efficient communicator. I am now able to help constituents get from A to B with certainty and while concisely explaining the process. I also learned how valuable networks really are and I have been consistently working on expanding mine. I have also learned the agencies both on the state and federal level and in which situations they can assist.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of my internship is when I was truly able to help people. There were a few times throughout my experience where a constituent had no place else to turn and I was able to help them with their situation.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This internship confirmed that I want to work in public service and gave me the experience needed to begin this journey.
