Job Title: Engineering Co-op, Trailer Products R&D
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes

Description of the Organization
SAF Holland manufactures semi truck and trailer suspensions, as well as suspensions for other heavy duty applications. The company is global, but the locations in Muskegon and Holland Michigan deal primarily with the American market. At the two locations there are 40 to 50 engineers. Currently, these two locations are only engineering centers with testing facilities. All manufacturing was moved to the southern US. There will be a big renovation and remodeling of the office in the next year or so!
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
In my third rotation the tasks I completed include the following: prototype design, that includes CAD, FEA, and hands on fabrication; FEA for various products; visits to suppliers; and physical testing of new ideas and product designs.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
MIG welding and some TIG; CAD; failure analysis; design for manufacture and assembly; knowledge of company products and the commercial vehicle industry.
Favorite Part of the Experience
The tasks assigned to me were never busy work. I always did something useful. I was able to learn a lot. I felt free to ask questions and to ask for help if I needed to. I appreciated not being micromanaged.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
Work at a company who makes high margin on the products. Gives more freedom of design, less restriction of cost. But also, a company of this size allows you to have control of your product, which I greatly appreciate. By contrast, at large companies you will not have such a privilege.
