Magnum Engineering is a product development company that serves clients large and small from many different fields. They provide electrical and mechanical services.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I had quite a few different projects. One was refurbishing a solder paste printer machine from the mid to late 80s. This included figuring out what was wrong with it, how to connect to it, and how ladder logic works. I had to design a board to interface with it and use a DOS emulator to communicate with it. Among other projects I also designed and tested three DC-DC power converters.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
One specific skill that I did not realize I would learn on this co-op was learning and designing basic ladder logic systems. This had interested me for a while and I was fortunate enough to be able to work on something that required me to know ladder logic. Another skill that I was very fortunate enough to gain experience with was DC-DC power systems. I had always thought power systems would be boring but there is quite a bit to them and this co-op really changed my mind about them. I actually had a lot of fun designing them. I also was required to reverse engineer a couple of boards and redesign them to better fulfill customers needs.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this co-op experience was the entire design process of my own projects. It was very rewarding to go through design, simulation, redesign, component selection, redesign, and testing and having something satisfy the requirements of a problem.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This has really shown me that I would really like to go into product development because I enjoyed learning about different fields and how electronic design fits with each field.
