Description of the Organization
Koops specializes in specialized factory automation systems. They design and manufacture assembly line machines for a variety of industries. The company has mechanical engineers responsible for designing the machine, controls engineers responsible for programming the machine, and launch engineers responsible for overseeing the assembly of the machines and interactions with customers.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I was a mechanical engineering intern which meant I was heavily involved in the design aspect of the company. I designed a number of modifications for existing machines as well as parts in machines still undergoing preliminary design. I was also responsible for ordering parts for machines, updating designs, and updating drawings. I also had the opportunity to get involved with a local robotics team and designed a workstation for them.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I gained a large amount of design skills using SolidWorks. I learned about the importance of design intent, accuracy in measurements and drawings, as well as material selection for load bearing applications and chemically unstable environments.
Favorite Part of the Experience
I enjoyed designing parts and machines on SolidWorks the most. Computer aided design has always been a passion of mine and Koops gave me the opportunity to exercise this passion. I also enjoyed getting to know my coworkers; Koops is full of amazing employees and makes an effort to keep us all engaged and motivated.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This job has made me realize that I was right to choose engineering as my career path. It has kept me interested, engaged, and intrigued. This experience has solidified my desire to become a successful engineer.
