Description of the Organization
The organization I was an intern at was Saint Mary's hospital in Downtown Grand Rapids, It has an oncology center, Neurology center, Post anesthesia center, as well as post maternal center after bearing child birth, I worked on one of the oncology floors.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I sat in on bed meetings, which was an overview of how full the hospital was for the day with beds, how many nurses they had on as well as PCA's and trying to make sure that every floor was staffed correctly and just an overview of what the day may look like with surgeries, patients getting discharged, etc.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Some specific skills and knowledge I gained through this experience was how the hospital worked form behind the scenes of the nurses, I overlooked the staffing part as well and the financial part of the floor and gained a sense of not only the hands on part of patients but how the hospital is kept together and ran smoothly from behind the scenes.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My Favorite part of the internship was doing budgeting, hospitals are multi billion dollar corporations that handle millions of dollars for just one department alone so that was cool to see where the money goes towards and how much they actually deal with.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
The experience really makes me want to stay in the health care field because I became friends with some of the nurses their and really got a sense of how much they actually care about the patients and how much they enjoy their job and that made me want to stay in this pathway because I want to do something that I will enjoy for the rest of my working career in a field that is beneficial to others, not just me.
