Description of the Organization
Hudsonville High School has 1,500 students on the main campus and around 500 on its freshman campus. The high school has been newly renovated to combine the freshman campus and the high school so it is now one building. They offer many sports and within those sports, some have multiple levels and are split between boys and girls. The different levels include freshman, Junior Varsity, Varsity, and Club.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
During my time at Hudsonville High School's athletic department, I worked within the office and at events. In the office, I was sorting through team mail, team rosters, and paperwork that needed to be sent to other schools and the officials, and made sure that certain events had officials listed. At the events, I would sell tickets, work the door, and work with the event manager to ensure the event ran smoothly. I was also able to learn from not only the head athletic director but the assistant athletic director as well. I was well-informed on how to handle certain situations with athletes, parents, and workers. Overall, I was learning how to manage an athletic department and gained more knowledge about what an athletic director does on a daily basis.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Some specific skills I feel I have gained through this experience would be event management, communication, scheduling, and budgeting. I was challenged with many different tasks and watched many different events and learned how to put on a successful event. I was taught what scheduling and budgeting look like for an athletic department and now know how each work and how to make them better over time.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this internship was having something different every day. No day was ever the same and I got to meet so many amazing people through this and am thankful for every one of them sharing their knowledge of athletics with me.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience showed me that I truly do belong in athletics. If it is not as an athletic director it can be an event manager or coach but I know that whatever it is and wherever I end up I know that it will be in the sports industry.
