Description of the Organization
Helix Steel is a smaller company that machines and packages concrete rebar. This rebar is cut into thin steel fibers that are twisted to provide 3D support. There is an office in Ann Arbor and a plant in Wyoming, MI.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
This semester I was a machine operator at the plant. This meant doing routine tasks like quality checks, restringing machines, and preventative maintenance. It also included diagnosing machine and quality issues and learning about how to fix those issues in a time-efficient manner.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
More machine design knowledge definitely. Not just knowing what each machine component does, but how and why. It also helped me understand the importance of proper operator training.
Favorite Part of the Experience
Seeing the new operator that I've trained become more knowledgeable about the machines we use.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
It has made me more curious about a career in manufacturing and machining processes. I would consider seeking a career concerning machining and machine design.
