Job Title: Investigative Intern
Major: Political Science

Description of the Organization
The Washington Center reaches out to schools in the United States and on an international level. The program has different areas such as criminal justice or international affairs. They sent out my resume to positions of interest in D.C. and Maryland. They are an unorganized program but helpful for career services such as resume or cover letter workshops. They require a lot of work but it pays off after completed.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I took an investigative intern position at the Public Defender's office of Rockville, Maryland where I served subpoena's, wrote statements of victims, photographed crime scenes, and testified in court. I also took a night class on Thursdays on how Washington really works regarding the relationship between the public, private, and non-profit sectors. I took part in a civic engagement program for the LGBTQA community that required 15 hours of community service. I had programming every Monday for International Affairs where we met professionals who found their way after college and provided insight to their careers.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I improved my critical thinking skills, ability to reflect on my growth, and overall professional mindset. I learned how to dress professionally, show up on time and prepared, and complete assignments on time and independently. I feel I am more of an adult and eager to graduate and begin my professional career. I know how to land my next position with the skills I learned in career workshops.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My position at the Public Defender's office showed me how much I already had to offer as a professional. I went into every attorneys office asking for work and it paid off immensely when I realized everyone knew my name and requested me to help first. I made networking connections that will be influential after law school. I also learned that law school is the right decision for me. I enjoyed going to work every day and being apart of the office. I also improved my ability to work independently and complete tasks that seem near impossible.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
I have the tools to land my dream job while keeping my options open as well. I didn't know how to network before this program and had never heard of an informational interview. I feel excited for an interview instead of scared or unprepared. I know what an elevator pitch consists of and how to sell myself as an employee. I also narrowed down what impassions me and how to precisely explain my interests. The friends I made also showed me how to be a professional while still having fun each day. I definitely won't ever forget this experience.
