Description of the Organization
The Grand Valley Game Operations team is a dynamic group comprising 15-20 dedicated student staff members and over five faculty advisors. Together, we manage game-day operations and event setups for all varsity sports hosted on the GVSU campus, ensuring professional execution of athletic events.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
My responsibilities included a wide range of tasks that ensured smooth operations for various sporting events. These included pre-game and game-day setup for venues, managing parking and traffic control on football game days, and serving on the sideline as soccer ball crew to support in-game operations, as well as substitutions. Additionally, I operated scoreboards for volleyball, basketball, and baseball games, maintained game statistics for basketball, and assisted with setup and teardown for track and field events.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
My experience allowed me to develop strong teamwork skills and a deep understanding of what it takes to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced environment. I learned to think on my feet, improvising and adapting to unexpected challenges as they arose. Additionally, I gained valuable insights into the intricacies of game and facility operations, as well as a comprehensive understanding of game-day management and the many components required for successful event execution.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this experience was the excitement and energy of the game-day atmosphere, which is truly unmatched. Being surrounded by passionate fans and working alongside my incredible coworkers made every event special. There's something electric in the air on game day that creates a unique and unforgettable experience.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience broadened my perspective and provided clarity about my future career path. It not only opened my eyes to new possibilities but also gave me a deeper understanding of my interests and strengths. Before this, I had never considered a career in game operations, but now I can genuinely see myself pursuing this field with enthusiasm.
