Description of the Organization

Viking Products is a small family owned company established in West Michigan that helps customers perfect their part and assembly designs according to their requirements and regulations, and helps test those designs to assure their quality and functionality.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

Rotation 1 of the co-op is focused on the testing process of parts. For this, we were tasked to do dimensionals of sample parts, Instron testing, hardness testing, torque testing, help put together PPAP packages that prove the part's quality, sort through parts for visual inspection, 3D print parts, create work instructions showing how to check parts with particular pieces of equipment, check drawings to keep track of changes, put together estimated drawings, and helped other engineers with any tasks that they needed help with, including picking up and dropping off parts from other manufacturing companies.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained so much from this co-op experience. I gained an understanding of how particular design specifics could effect the performance of parts when applied, gained experience with testing equipment such as the Intron and hardness testers, perfected my Microsoft skills, and perfected my SolidWorks skills.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of my co-op experience was interacting with the other project engineers. I had so many questions and needed guidance on many tasks and processes I was new to. They were happy to answer all my questions and even took the time to explain further into the deeper details.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

It introduced me to the mechanical side of my field, and proved to me that what I am going for is the field I want to work in, which is biomedical engineering with a mechanical emphasis.
