JR Automation develops custom automated solutions for its customers, from fully automated assembly lines to stand alone stations. It has been in business since 1980, has business units in 8 locations, and 750+ employees.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
My tasks included everything from customer facility visits, concept development, and cost development, to presenting these ideas and costing to lead managers and then to engineers from the companies I would be submitting these quotes to. I was also able to work with our research and development team to develop and present innovative solutions to customers requesting technology that hadn't been previously tested.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
The major skills I gained through this co-op was my methods of concept development, my knowledge base of engineering products on the market, and my ability to develop a budget for future projects. I also enhanced my social/people skills along with technical writing abilities.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this co-op experience was overcoming the steep learning curve that comes with this position. I was also able to get quite a bit of work done and actually win a few jobs for the company. Seeing your work make a difference in the company proves that you are doing your job correctly and making an impact.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
I personally didn't think I was going to enjoy quoting but after getting into the position, I did. Having the freedom to develop an entire concept for a product, while having experienced professionals around you for guidance, develop a cost, and submit your idea to a company, is very fulfilling. Developing "out of the box" concepts that increase efficiency of a machine and decrease its cost is very satisfying in itself. It is nice to be able to work for a week or two developing a quote and then just be done with it and on to the next. There is never a dull or repetitive day.
