SAF-HOLLAND is an international manufacturer of commercial vehicle axle and suspension systems, fifth wheels, kingpins and trailer landing gear. SAF-HOLLAND, Inc. is the Michigan-based subsidiary of SAF-HOLLAND, S.A. which had sales of 1.1 billion euro in 2017 and more than 4,100 employees. It sells its products to original equipment manufacturers and spare parts distribution, and works closely with fleet operators and trucking companies.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
The Electrical Engineering department performs work related to all aspects of product development and production. The tasks have been hands-on and provide great opportunities to work on the development and production of company products. Projects in this rotation included commercial vehicle electrical system network analysis, web server management, microcontroller evaluation, programming, and testing, and extensive research for product development.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
In this experience I developed skills in vehicle electrical networking, web server management, microcontroller programming and testing, and product and electronic board production. I also received significant experience in research, communication, and documentation.
Favorite Part of the Experience
I liked the diversity of assignments with opportunities for physical construction of products and electronic boards, board and software programming, as well as research and documentation.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has further interested me in the commercial vehicle and automotive industry. This experience provided great perspective on the environmental considerations for product design and development.
