Experience Information

Employer: Trelleborg Vibracoustic
Job Title: Mechanical Engineer co-op
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes

Description of the Organization

Trelleborg Vibracoustic is a tier 1 supplier to the big three automotive companies that design, build and test anti-vibration parts such as motor mounts and chassis components. The plant I worked in is a small prototyping facility in which the parts are designed, fabricated and tested in small quantities. Once the parts are ready to be produced, other TBVC plants take over the production of the parts.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

TBVC implemented a great co-op program for me in which I worked in each department before becoming an engineer. I started molding and assembling parts to get a good understanding of the fabrication process. I then worked in the test lab to better understand the different types of tests that can be performed. I finished the semester working in the chemical lab where all the rubber is produced. This is my first of three semesters at TBVC and I will begin design projects my next semester.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned how to mold parts, perform tests, and mix chemicals to make rubber. I also learned how use all the machines in order to accomplish each of these tasks.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I really enjoyed how I learned so many different aspects of engineering all in one semester. I have worked closely with the engineers in all these different aspects of manufacturing so I think it will help me be a well-rounded engineer in the future.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

It has motivated me to continue on with my degree in engineering. It has opened my eyes to all the different kinds of work a mechanical engineer can do. Because of this experience, I think I want to design parts in the future rather than the tooling.
