Description of the Organization

TowerPinkster is an A&E firm with offices in both Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids which has just recently celebrated its 60th anniversary. They specialize in sustainable building design for a wide variety of fields; such as education (k-12 and high education), healthcare, governmental, and other commercial projects such corporate headquarters and apartment complexes.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I have worked on a several projects throughout the semester, all of which varied in both size and subject matter. My first project consisted of a total redesign of the mechanical systems (HVAC, mechanical equipment, and domestic plumbing) of an elementary school in the KPS school system. I also did several HVAC energy models for a medical care facility as well as cooling design project for Western University's Read Arena.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I worked primarily out of Autodesk's Revit Architectural software modeling HVAC and piping systems but I also worked in autoCAD on occasion. Furthermore, I used Trace 700, an energy modeling software, on several occasions to help size heating and cooling systems. I had the opportunity get on-site experience by meeting with other companies, going on several site visits for projects, and even sitting in on a contractor bid announcement ceremony.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this experience has been the people I have had the opportunity to work with. It is a company that likes to work hard and have a lot of fun. From my first day they made me feel welcome and appreciated. At the end of that first day my supervisor told me "we will put you on a project as soon as you feel you are ready" and by my second day I had begun my first project. Everything I have worked on has had a direct impact on the company and because of the nature of the profession; I have worked on a variety of different projects while learning from a group of amazing engineers.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I originally wanted to become an engineering student due to an interest in alternative energy and sustainable building design. Working at TowerPinkster has reaffirmed and strengthened that purpose.
