Description of the Organization
Arbor Circle is a large organization that is dedicated to helping individuals in the Grand Rapids community with mental health and substance abuse issues. Arbor Circle provides individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, and many other services related to the mental health and substance abuse fields.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
As a first semester intern, I began by conducting a lot of research about the theory and interventions I was most comfortable using with clients. I had the opportunity to observe another MSW therapist in action, conducting one-on-one home-based individual therapy. Throughout the semester, my confidence was building and I was able to meet with clients on my own, conducting therapy with them in their homes. Throughout my three months at Arbor Circle I worked with two different programs, both focusing on substance use disorders among mothers with children living in their homes.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
This internship was my first experience actually providing therapy for individuals. Reading books and practicing with classmates is beneficial, but to actually be thrown into the field and have real clients was priceless. I gained a lot of self-awareness, confidence, and knowledge through interactions with other social workers in the organization. I was able to find out what my strengths and weaknesses are regarding my skills.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this internship experience was receiving weekly supervision from the clinical supervisor in charge of the programs I was working with. Having an individual who has worked in the field for quite some time is extremely beneficial. Being able to fully accept constructive criticism was an important aspect of my internship and development.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
I never thought I would be comfortable with home-based work, but I truly loved the experience and would be open to a career in the home-based therapy field. This internship opportunity allowed me to try something I may have never done, which may have hindered my future career. I am excited to spend the next two semesters at Arbor Circle gaining further knowledge of the field, learning from my future colleagues, and building on the base of skills I have gained thus far.
