Description of the Organization
JR Automation which designs, builds, and programs entire assembly lines for manufacturing sector (primarily auto manufacturing). The company has approximately 700 employees distributed over 6 business units. At each BU the employees are separated by departments (controls, quoting, design, etc.), and each department has one or two engineering managers.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
During my time at JR I designed stations for assembly lines, modified existing assemblies, and detailed and checked design prints.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Through this experience I learned how to use CREO (CAD software similar to Solidworks), how to structure a design project for top-down design, and how to detail design drawings. I also learned about different manufacturing materials (such as 4140 tool steel, delrin, PTFE, etc) and manufacturing processes (such as laser cutting, cnc router, waterjet cut, etc.).
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this co-op was the culture and sense of community shared by JR employees. Everyone makes it a goal to get to know everyone by name, and everyone is always willing to help and teach however they can. It's really a wonderful environment to work and grow in.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
I realized that I really like to design and will definitely want to stay with JR in the future as I can see myself having a long-term career at this company.
