Description of the Organization
Deksia is a Marketing Strategy & Brand Development Agency so it was the perfect place for me to do my advertising and public relations internship. They do extensive work in brand identity and development as well as strategic plans for small to medium sized businesses. The company itself is small, 16 people split between two offices. One here in Grand Rapids where I did my internship and one in Iowa. The Iowa office is considered the creative team and the Grand Rapids location has the rest of the crew, sales, research, advertising, and web development.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
In my time at Deksia I did many web updates for clients via google ads and google analytics. I also kept client information up to date across the board on all websites using third party scanning services and other SEO tactics that Deksia taught me while I was there. I created Facebook, Instagram and email ads for various clients and created email drip campaigns.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Before my internship at Deksia I had never heard of Search Engine Optimization. They specifically had me study this practice along side my supervisor. They sent him to multiple SEO conferences in just the few months I was working there. He was very knowledgeable about the changing world of search engine optimization.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this internship was having the opportunity to learn something totally different than I had been taught in school. Sometimes the same concepts can get repetitive over time and this provided me with a fresh way of thinking about the advertising profession.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has helped cement my goals to eventually be a creative director in an agency setting. At Deksia they recognized my interest in digital art and cultivated it by putting me in contact with their own creative director and have further helped me by going as far as to connect me with a creative business partner that has provided a post - grad full time position.
