R&D with Gill Electronics

Experience Information

Employer: Gill Electronics
Job Title: Research & Development
Major: Electrical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

Gill Electronics is a new branch off of Gill Industries. As a start-up group of 5 guys including myself, we are developing wireless charging models that will be able to charge phones, tablets, laptops, etc. just by placing the device on the area designated for charging.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I did lots of LTspice simulation and Eagle schematic layouts. I researched and developed human presence detection for the wireless charger as well as researching boost converters and battery charging.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I now understand at a much more detailed level about inductance coupling to transfer energy through electromagnetic waves. I have learned how to effectively research and design different circuits on LTspice and Eagle.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part was the diversity of all of the things I have been assigned. I thought my first few months would be simple "intern" jobs such as retrieve coffee and such, but this was not the case. I was able to get my hands dirty and really dig deep into the electronics world. It is so cool to be a part of the team here!

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

It has shown me that engineering is not easy. It is very difficult stuff, but if you work hard at it, you will learn a ton! My plan is to keep on keeping on.
