Description of the Organization
Dematic is a global leader that specializes in material handling and logistical solutions. Currently employing more than 6,000 people, Dematic is present in 22 countries. Solutions offered by Dematic include Automated Guided Vehicles, Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems, as well as sortation and conveying systems.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
While at Dematic, I have completed a wide variety of engineering tasks. I work on the Amazon Mechanical Engineering team which designs conveying and sortation systems for Amazon Fulfillment Centers. My day-to-day functions include making/updating drawings in AutoCAD. These drawings are sent to installation teams on the jobsite to aid in the installation of conveying systems. I also order parts that may have been missed or ordered incorrectly during primary order entry.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Like my last Co-op experience I have continued to gain experience with Dematic's software packages and AutoCAD. I have also expanded my communication skills as they are very important in the daily operations of an engineer.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this Co-op experience was to be able to work along side Dematic's engineers and be given my own tasks to complete. Dematic really lets Co-op students get a full experience by treating them like a full time engineer. Each Co-op student is assigned an experienced engineer as a mentor to answer questions that may arise. Dematic provides an excellent Co-op experience for Grand Valley students.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This Co-op experience has reaffirmed how great of a company Dematic is. Dematic provides an excellent opportunity for Co-op students to learn the ropes while attending school and become a full time engineer after graduation.
