Dematic has a matrix organizational structure which allows different departments and different projects to come together in order to effectively get the job done. Dematic is happy to be a recent addition to KION Group, the world's second largest manufacturer of industrial trucks.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
During this co-op semester, I was involved in many different tasks. I held a department-wide meeting on a safety feature on the conveyor. I traveled to California for two weeks to commission a customer site. I traveled to Kansas to perform a site audit in preparation for install of a new project. I frequently read drawings in order to find specific parts needed on site. I completed orders and tracked them until they arrived to site. I participated in daily meetings, providing updates on the arrival of parts constantly. I was also involved in creating and updating drawings that are needed on site for installation purposes.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
This semester, I became a lot better at reading drawings and finding specific parts. I also expanded my knowledge in ELM and SAP when ordering and tracking parts. Going to site helped me learn the application of different models of conveyor and the parts associated with them.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part was traveling to Rancho Cucamonga, CA to commission a site. The hands-on experience was very beneficial in terms of aligning the name of each product with it's physical appearance. This can be difficult because the drawings that I typically see and deal with are 2-D so it is hard to picture what it really looks like. Going to site makes the connection a lot more solid. It also helps with my problem solving skills and knowing what issues to look for when I go to site.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
Similar to last summer, this experience has made me want to grow at Dematic and continue to learn everything I can about the conveyor. One day, I hope to move up in the company and potentially become an engineering manager with my own team.
