Description of the Organization
GVSU Recreation & Wellness is a campus department within the Division of Student Affairs. There are several different program-areas that make up the department such as Fitness, Wellness, Sports, and Outdoor Adventures. Each of these areas are led by professional staff with the support of student workers within each area.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
As a Student Supervisor for Club Sports, I handled a vast variety of different tasks required to administrate a successful and meaningful program. The tasks involved ranged from administrative to event management and planning. During my administrative days, I worked on streamlining processes regarding travel and vehicle rentals, front-end web development, and scheduling other student staff throughout the semester. During event management shifts, I would spearhead primary setup for numerous different club competitions. This involved getting gear from storage, field setup, operating the scoreboard, and ensuring GVSU policies were being followed.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
The number one skill I obtained through this experience is time management. In this position, it was quite easy to get bogged down by all of the different types of tasks that needed completion throughout the day; however, with a bit of organizing and use of a to-do list/planner, managing my time allowed me to be successful. Another skill I gained from this experience was patience. Nothing worth working towards comes quickly or easily especially in this position; however, with patience and putting in the work required each day, all of the pieces of the puzzle tend to fall into place.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part about my internship experience was being able to see the effect our department has on each and every student at Grand Valley. Taking on an internship in Student Affairs was truly a wonderful experience as I saw the direct positive outcomes of the work we put in daily.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has definitely pulled me towards this sort of career in the future. I eventually would like to obtain my Master's Degree before returning to the field but it has definitely put recreation and wellness departments on my radar for the future.
