Description of the Organization
Gentex is an leading company in the automotive industry. The main product is rearview mirrors, but also work in other fields such as fire protection and aerospace. Gentex has a large structure, with divided organizations that have different teams within themselves.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I worked on testing programs that the customers wanted for rearview mirrors. I was given set detailed requirements and it was my responsibility to implement tests based on these requirements. I had to notify the team of any defects that arose from my test development, and I was in charge of running test iterations once the build was ready to be released.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I learned how to create tests that satisfied the requirements; to making sure specific LEDs turned on for given conditions, sending/receiving LIN signals, or even watching waveforms in order to verify RF signals. Each project came with different tests so I was constantly learning.
Favorite Part of the Experience
The company culture was really great. It was easy to learn and develop my skills as the people around me were helpful in guiding me in the right direction. Gentex also has a great work balance- we are provided with amenities and events to make sure the employees are never burnt out. They are also very involved in the West Michigan community, which is amazing to be a part of.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
It has influenced my career paths in figuring out what kind of work environment I want to be in. Personally, one of the most important factors in choosing your career is the people and organization you'd be working with everyday. I now understand what kind of environment I want to be in, because it would not only be beneficial to me in terms of growth but also to what I contribute to the company, as well.
