Experience Information

Employer: Rose Medical
Job Title: Engineering Intern
Major: Biomedical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes

Description of the Organization

Rose Medical is a small medical device manufacturing company with 130-150 employees and two locations in Grand Rapids. A majority of the devices produced are made by operators aided by tools and machines made in house. In simple terms, a customer comes to a project engineer with a design, and the project engineer works with the manufacturing engineers and operators to bring that device to production. All the while maintaining safety, quality, and traceability.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

For the majority of this rotation, I worked to update and redesign fixtures used in production so they were easier to use. Another project was to analysis the measurement tools and methods in place for a product and report the results back to the customer. I also took measurements on incoming components when a new shipment arrived.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I refined my skills in Solid works assembly, learned to use machine shop equipment such as band saws, and mills to machine parts for a fixture I was working on. I also gained experience working with pneumatics to power different features of the fixture.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this rotation is everything I learned and all the challenges I was able to overcome. Although I am independent and prefer solving problems on my own, I learned to lean on my experienced coworkers and it taught me much more and faster than I could've learned on my own. It also helped my confidence in the workplace as I knew I could count on others if I got stuck.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I feel I have a better grasp of what it means to be an engineer and am better equipped to strategically solve problems. My career goal is still to design and manufacture prosthetics for veterans and active duty soldiers, but I've realized there are many paths to this and am confident I will achieve this goal.
