Magna Mirrors Engineering Center in Kentwood is a part of Magna International, a large global automotive supplier. Magna International operates numerous divisions, each focusing on different aspects of automotive manufacturing and engineering. Magna Mirrors specifically designs and manufactures automotive mirrors and related systems. The organization is structured to support various functions such as research and development, testing, quality control, and manufacturing, ensuring seamless collaboration and innovation across different departments.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

During the Co-Op at Magna Mirrors Engineering Center, I engaged in a variety of tasks and projects that spanned testing, machining, design, and collaboration. I conducted several tests to ensure product reliability and usability, including temperature, vibration, dust, and impact tests. I gained hands-on experience with machining and assembling components, working with CNC technology, and creating prototypes. My design work included developing models and proposals for custom fixtures and enclosures. Additionally, I finalized technical reports, created documentation to assist future interns, and collaborated with different departments to design and test parts for various projects.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

Through this experience, I developed a range of technical and professional skills. I became proficient in modeling and design software, improved my hands-on machining abilities, and learned to conduct and analyze various engineering tests. My professional skills were enhanced through effective communication and collaboration with colleagues across departments. I also gained experience in technical writing, project management, cost estimation, and design evaluation, all of which are essential for a successful engineering career.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this Co-Op experience was the hands-on technical work and the diverse range of tasks I was involved in. I particularly enjoyed the process of designing and machining components, conducting rigorous tests, and collaborating with different teams. The opportunity to create prototypes, test them, and refine my designs based on feedback was highly rewarding and provided both creative and analytical challenges.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This Co-Op experience has significantly shaped my future career goals by highlighting the importance of technical proficiency, thorough testing, and effective communication in engineering. The exposure to various aspects of product development, from design to testing and collaboration, has strengthened my desire to pursue a career in engineering. The skills and knowledge I gained will be instrumental in achieving my long-term career objectives, which include mastering advanced engineering tools and techniques and contributing to innovative projects within the automotive industry.
