Experience Information

Employer: DornerWorks
Job Title: Embedded Engineering Intern
Major: Computer Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

DornerWorks is a small embedded engineering company with around 100 engineers. Since a majority of the company works at least partly remote, on any given day there was around 40-50 people in office. The teams are organized around common projects such as networking or hypervisor teams. The company works on many different projects including FPGA, AI/ML, networking, hypervisors, medical prosthesis, IOT, and many others.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I got to work on quite a variety of things. I mainly worked with the networking team creating a GUI application to help configure XML configs to set up multiple TSN devices. I ran through testing protocols for multiple hardware projects. I also got to build and show demo's for some of the TSN devices.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned a lot about GUI development. I also learned a lot about time sensitive networking and how that works. One of my favorite things I learned was socket programming (sending data over Ethernet). I also got to learn a bit about how testing protocols and demos are created and executed.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I think my favorite part of the internship has been working on a demo for showing off multiple TSN devices. It is a combination of everything I worked on during the semester. I am using the GUI I helped develop to create the configs for the devices used, one of the devices being used I ran through the testing protocol before the release, and using socket programming with a raspberry pi to send data through the devices.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

Somewhat, I knew I wanted to work in embedded systems and this internship just cemented that I enjoy working in that field. Since I was working on the networking team that did a lot with FPGAs, it did spike an interest to learn more and maybe work with FPGAs in the future.
