Description of the Organization
Bethany Christian Services is a large agency that have offices in many corners of the world. I specifically work at the Grand Rapids location in the refugee resettlement department. There are about 70 employees who work in this branch. There are various programs including post-resettlement, employment and resettlement that I work with.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
As an AmeriCorps member, it was my job to build capacity and help the organization grow in some problem areas. I primarily work with the resettlement team, who assist refugees their first 90 days in the country, and the community engagement team. I communicate with donors and uphold partnerships with nonprofits to help acquire resources and items to assist our clients.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I have worked on some grant writing projects, this has definitely increased my knowledge of technical writing. I have also learned a lot about cultural competency and how to work with people from many different cultures and how to navigate language barriers.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part was working in such a diverse space. My colleagues and the clients we work with all come from different backgrounds and parts of the world. Working with these folks has taught me so much and has enhanced my work experience.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
My AmeriCorps position has taught me how passionate I am about working in the community and doing immigration work. I hope to continue doing both of these things in my career.
