Experience Information

Job Title: Controls Intern
Major: Electrical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes

Description of the Organization
HS Die & Engineering is an injection molding and automation company located right down Lake Michigan Drive. The company has around 200 employees overall.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
My tasks included building control panels, wiring machines, editing electrical schematics, debugging machines, and programming PLCs. I also did some work with a client who needed a secondary HMI display on a few of their machines.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Exposure to electrical schematics and machine design, exposure to electrical standards, basic understanding of ladder logic
Favorite Part of the Experience
Co-op was sequential and allowed topics to build on one another, which built a foundation in controls engineering step-by-step, from concept to machine completion. My supervisor understood the knowledge base an average engineering co-op comes to work with and gave me tasks that followed each other nicely.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This rotation has solidified my interest in becoming a controls engineer, having observed my supervisor and the engineers I worked with over the semester work on their projects. I enjoyed being able to see some of the machines that I built the control panels for get troubleshot and taught how everything culminates into a working machine.
