Description of the Organization
I am currently working as a Data Analyst at Ferris State University College of Pharmacy. It is a public university, and the College of Pharmacy campus is located in Big Rapids (first two-year curriculum) and Grand Rapids (third-year curriculum). There are approximately 14000+ students and 1500+ employees.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
Currently, I am working on antibiotic prescription data from outpatient clinics in the health systems of Michigan. My role is to conduct ETL to clean and transform the unstructured messy data into structured data and load them to the SQL Server database. Several SQL transformations are done on several attributes to standardize the values. I have also created several metrics on the data warehouse to measure antibiotic use and appropriateness. I am currently creating dashboards on Power BI based on the patient data to analyze if health providers are following practice guidelines when writing a prescription with respect to drug choice and dosing choice.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Considering skills gained through this experience, One of the significant things I learned is to clean the raw and messy health records by implementing NumPy and pandas library in python and loading them into the SQL server database. Also I have designed a normalized database where the attributes are well distributed to different tables in a normalized order.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this internship is the opportunity to work on actual patient data of the patients of health systems. The finding I got after analyzing the dosing of each medication included in the prescription and comparing it with the FDA Guidelines, the statistical results were significant.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has influenced and motivated me a lot toward my career goal. I had the occasion to go through the complete data life cycle in this internship experience. This helped me to understand the overall process of how raw and messy real-world data can be, what are the challenges we face to structure it and what analysis tricks can work to get significant findings. These things have influenced me to meet my career goals.
