Description of the Organization
Center for Inquiry (CFI) strives to foster a secular society based on reason, science, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. They do this through hosting events and campaigns to let people know about the values that we all share and how they can be viewed in a way that doesn't pit people against each other as well as ways in which we can all learn and understand each other. CFI Michigan has an executive director, a local Advisory Board and many volunteers.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
During my internship here I assisted mostly with event promotion and social media outreach. I had to update the primary site as well as many social media accounts with information about upcoming events. This also included drafting emails and press releases. Updating policies and procedures was also a main focus. With a staff of volunteers it is common to have people come and go, so having the ability to convey the processes required for the organization to run are important to have on. Making sure they are up to date and accurate is essential.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Having to coordinate and monitor different methods of promotion required me to learn systems that could access multiple networks. This like Hootsuite was something I had to learn. Another important thing was analytics. Always trying to find a more optimal way to reach people, the way we did things was always under review to see if it could be improved upon.
Favorite Part of the Experience
Actually getting to know more about the organization, since I have known about it for a while.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
It hasn't really, though I could see myself doing more with nonprofits in the future.
