Description of the Organization

GHSP provides highly engineered solutions to a wide range of customers. We have three major areas of production; shift systems, smart actuators, and electronics. Our shift systems team creates many necessary components for a variety of OEM Auto manufacturers. Smart Actuators builds specialized pumps for hybrid transmissions. The electronics team supports our other areas, as well as creates their own specialized products.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

This was my third and final rotation at GHSP. Over the course of the semester, I was tasked with different root cause analysis assignments. I helped record and track a major failure as well as work with the team designated to solve it. We made some major breakthroughs and I found a lot of valuable information from my data. I was also given the failures from our dyno tester to sort and analyze. I've helped look through and determine the causes of some of these varying failure methods we have seen.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained a lot of knowledge on our root cause analysis procedure and how to go about finding the cause of a failure. I learned how to disassembly parts to look at specific components. I was also shown how to use some large machines to cut apart failed parts in order to remove pieces from their metal housings.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of my final semester here at GHSP was the business trip I went on in August. I was put on a team to reflash new software onto hundreds of our products. A lot of these products I reflashed onsite, before we shipped them out. In order to reflash all of the other parts we had already shipped out, teams were sent to various locations around the world to catch them before they reached their final destination. My team was sent to Oregon to reflash parts already assembled in cars before they were shipped to China. It was an awesome experience to travel for work and to work with people from other companies. Me and my partner worked directly with a Ford representative and a handful of technicians from Roush. It was also cool to see our part assembled into a fully built vehicle, that was a first for me.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This experience has reconfirmed my new interest in manufacturing engineering. I always loved figuring out how to take apart and put things back together as a kid. Now, I'm doing the same thing, on a larger more meaningful scale. I now understand why it takes a good manufacturing engineer to become a great design engineer and I hope to further my knowledge and experience in both areas here at GHSP. I have been offered the opportunity to come to work full time at GHSP after I graduate college, so this has been an amazing opportunity for me. I am looking forward to the years to come and seeing where GHSP will take me!
