Description of the Organization
West Michigan Refugee Educational and Cultural Center is a non-profit organization that facilitates refugee integration into society. The mission of the organization is to "To support refugee children and families to gain the necessary skills for seamless and successful integration into the community through providing comprehensive educational support and youth development services, along with fostering cultural knowledge and understanding."
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
Much of my tasks in the after school program was to help students learn and grow as individuals, teaching them values that will help to empower themselves for future aspirations.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I learned the difficulties that refugees experience and how the phenomenon of the growing refugee population continues to go unresolved each day. I gained insight on cultures around the world and greater insight of what international relationships looks like in our modern society.
Favorite Part of the Experience
Working with kids has brightened my life, getting to be a positive influence on them and showing them that people care about them.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
I am working towards finding a career in international community development and as I have been shown all these different cultures, I am better prepared to move into the global community and make a difference in my own small way.
